March of Dimes
The March of Dimes is a national initiative that we participate in every year. The goal of March of Dimes is to support healthy pregnancy and prevent premature deaths. In 2012 the Fraternity's NY State Director of Social Action set a charitable goal of $1500 for each Alumni Chapter. Mu Delta Sigma accomplished this goal through different fundraising efforts and solicitation. We raised $3500, the second highest amount raised by a team in the Eastern Region.
About March of Dimes: The March of Dimes is a not-for-profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The foundation is headquartered in White Plains, NY and has 51 chapters across the U.S., including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
American Diabetes Association Walk
The American Diabetes Association Walk is another national initiative we participated in this past year. Usually, chapter brothers collect money for this event and walk. This year we chose another option. Our Social Action Chair proposed it would be more useful for us to volunteer. The event took place at Jones Beach. During the event we served water and food, gave directions to walkers and cheered people on as they walked. More than 20 of our sorority sisters and fraternity brothers came out to help. Some of the young men from our Mentoring Program also participated.
About the American Diabetes Association: We lead the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes and fight for those affected by diabetes. We fund research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes. We deliver services to hundreds of communities. We provide objective and credible information. We give voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.
Health Awareness & Education Forum
Living healthy is a big concern in the black community. In the past our chapter has collaborated with other organizations to teach people about healthy lifestyles. This year we held a Health Forum as directed by our national programming. Various health professionals, including doctors and a nurse came to speak about healthy living. The presentations were very informative. One of the presenters instructed us about breast and testicular cancer by displaying simulated props. Another presenter taught us CPR using baby and adult simulations. Exhibits included cardiac monitors to demonstrate the measurement of someone’s heartbeats.
Annual Toy Drive
Every year Mu Delta Sigma has a toy drive with donations from the general public and partnering with local restaurants asking patrons to donate toys.
